Hospet Sumitra was the first Bishop in Rayalaseema of the Church of South India.〔 After graduating from the Central College of Bangalore,〔Rajaiah David Paul, ''The first decade: an account of the Church of South India'', Christian Literature Society, Chennai, 1958. ()〕 he studied theology at the United Theological College, Bengaluru between 1910 to 1913 and was among its first students〔The United Theological College, Directory 1910-1997, Bengaluru, 1997. p. 12. ()〕 and studied under L. P. Larsen, J. Mathers, F. Kingsbury, G. E. Phillips, W. H. Thorp, D. S. Herrick, and others.
